The rich culture and historic relics that are woven into the fabric of San Antonio give way to annual festivities and events which are celebrated with much delight. For some families who have lived in the city for generations, attending and commemorating particular events has become a tradition not to be missed. Those new to the city can explore the various events taking place around the year to begin new traditions or simply enjoy the city as it comes together to rejoice. The following calendar of events highlights just some of the festivities held annually.

 
January
The U.S. Army All-American Bowl
The premier national high school football all-star game caps off a week of activities for athletes and fans - an East vs. West showdown featuring the nation’s top 78 high school football players. www.allamericangames.com

Michelob ULTRA Riverwalk Mud Festival
Held for one week in January to celebrate the draining of the San Antonio River for maintenance by the Parks & Recreation Department. Civic & Media personalities vie for the title of the Michelob Ultra Mud Queen & Mud King by competing to see who can raise the most quarter votes for the Association. The celebration features: Michelob Ultra Mud Pie Ball, Michelob Ultra Pub Crawl, Michelob Ultra Mud Coronation, Michelob Ultra Mud Parade, and an Arts & Crafts Show. (210) 227-4262,

Martin Luther King, Jr. March and Rally
Largest people’s march in the country honoring the civil rights leader. The event draws more than 100,000 adults and children. Other activities are planned citywide. Free. (210) 207-2098,

Houston Street Fair & Market
One-day event that takes place monthly and offers San Antonians and their families a place to come together and have fun. Sounds of laughter fills the air in the children’s activity area where kids can have their faces painted, listen to storytellers or play on rides. Bring your lawnchair and enjoy the day’s activities. The fair also features hand-made art and crafts by artists and artisans from San Antonio and the surrounding areas. There are drinks and food. San Antonio Stock Show & Rodeo

Watercolor Month
In San Antonio, the winds of March blow in Watercolor Month. SeaWorld San Antonio

Dyeing O’ the River Green and St. Patrick’s Day River Parade

Fiesta San Antonio!
Fiesta San Antonio is a 10-day citywide celebration, which includes exciting carnivals, spectacular sports, fantastic fireworks, lively entertainment, ethnic feasts, art exhibits and sparkling parades that glide down San Antonio’s River Walk and streets. More than 100 unique events, to satisfy every taste and interest, drawing some 3 million participants and spectators from around the city, nation and world. Since 1891 when the first Fiesta event, the Battle of Flowers, honored the memory of our Texas heroes, Fiesta has expanded the initial commemoration to include the recognition and celebration of San Antonio’s rich and diverse cultures. Cinco de Mayo Events

Tejano Conjunto Festival en San Antonio

The San Antonio New World Wine & Food Festival
This Festival is giving wine and food aficionados one more thing to be thankful for this November. The Festival will showcase the Alamo City’s finest restaurants and chefs as well as celebrity guests from Mexico, Miami, Manhattan and all over Texas as it celebrates San Antonio as a premier wine and food destination and an important culinary and cultural gateway to Mexico and Latin America. Texas Folklife Festival
Join the fun and celebrate the 36th anniversary of the Texas Folklife Festival. Hosted by UTSA’s Institute of Texan Cultures in HemisFair Park, this four-day cultural extravaganza brings more than 40 ethnic groups together in one place to showcase their authentic food (150 dishes), great music (65 bands), colorful dance (50 folk dance groups) and authentic craft (50 craft demonstrators and 50 craft vendors). Juneteenth
Observances throughout the city, including a picnic, festival, Freedom Fair, and cultural celebrations honoring the date, June 19, 1865, that Texas slaves received word of the Emancipation Proclamation.

Contemporary Art Month
The only month-long contemporary arts festival in the nation features more than 400 exhibitions and involves more than 50 venues. Events take place in galleries, museums, neighborhoods and studios. This special month is a celebration with a focus on Contemporary Art in San Antonio. Some events have an admission charge. Fourth of July
Festivals, concerts and fireworks at locations across the city celebrate America’s freedom. Weekend includes Freedom Fest celebration at Market Square, arts and crafts show along the River Walk and extravaganzas at local theme parks.

Annual San Antonio Conjunto
A celebration that revitalizes an old custom of “mano-a-mano,” a form of competition between two conjunto groups to determine who is best. This event utilizes a similar concept except the conjuntos are on opposite stages facing each other. More than 25 local entertainers are paired during the two-day event. FORD Canoe Challenge
Over 90 canoe teams compete in the FORD Canoe Challenge…local celebrities, city officials, corporate teams and Boy Scouts & Girl Scouts compete in timed heats. The race begins at the Greater Chamber of Commerce, heads east through and around the Convention Center Lagoon, through the River Center Mall Lagoon and ending back at the Greater Chamber of Commerce. FotoSeptiembre USA
One of the three largest photography festivals in the country, this month-long celebration of photography includes innovative photographic techniques, multi-media presentations and traditional photographic images at various venues. Texas Football Classic

Diez y Seis Events
Marking Mexico’s independence from Spain, San Antonio celebrates September 16 with special events all over town. Events include a street parade with floats and marching bands, a gala, Market Square celebrations, festivals, dance presentations, and other special activities. Fall Arts Festival Event.

Valero Texas Open at La Cantera
The tournament is the 3rd oldest tournament on TOUR (starting in San Antonio in 1922). OFFICIAL PGA TOUR tournament is played in the same city its entire existence. It has been one of the top-three most charitable tournaments on TOUR for the last several years. 72-hole. Admission.

A Festival of Films™

El Dia de los Muertos
Translated literally as “the Day of the Dead,” this important and ancient celebration in the Mexican cultural tradition is a celebration in which the family welcomes back departed loved ones, sharing the joys of life with them as their memories live on. Creative and respectful altars are set up with ofrendas around town at galleries, cultural centers, restaurants and elsewhere commemorating loved ones who have passed on. Cemeteries are popular with families decorating the graves, especially with some of holiday’s staples of marigolds, pan de muerto (Dead Bread), sugar skulls and other traditional items. Holiday River Parade and Lighting Ceremony
Presented by the Paseo del Rio Association and the City of San Antonio. Held the day following Thanksgiving, the switch is pulled to turn on over 122,000 lights illuminating the River Walk until New Year’s Day.
