Thanks to the foresight of city leaders in the 1940s, residents of San Antonio have access to the largest medical research and care provider in South Texas – the South Texas Medical Center (STMC). Patients from all areas of the United States, Mexico and beyond access STMC, home to San Antonio's finest medical facilities, including 45 medically related institutions: medical, dental and nursing schools, medical treatment and research, 12 hospitals and five specialty institutions.

There are numerous other medical facilities outside the boundaries of the South Texas Medical Center, including 25 short-term general hospitals, two children's psychiatric hospitals, two state hospitals and two Department of Defense hospitals. In 2007, the economic impact of health care services on the San Antonio economy was $9.1 billion, and the economic impact of physicians and hospitals was $2.7 billion and $4.4 billion, respectively.

The Army’s role will grow within the next six years in the areas of medical training and education, medical research and health care operations. The Army’s Medical Department Center and School will expand to become the Defense Department Center for all military allied health care medical training and education, in addition to nursing, anesthesiology, physical therapy, physician assistant and health care management graduate programs.

Brooke Army Medical Center (BAMC)

Brooke Army Medical Center (BAMC) is a regional referral center for Operation Iraqi Freedom and Operation Enduring Freedom (Afghanistan) patients. BAMC also deploys the Burn Special Medical Augmentation Response Team (B-SMART) that focuses on burn, decontamination, weapons of mass destruction, behavioral medicine and emergency medicine. BAMC is nationally recognized for ophthalmology and physical
therapy programs.

The South Texas Veterans
Health Care System

The South Texas Veterans Health Care System has an active ambulatory care program that provides primary-level services to veterans throughout South Texas. It also supports a 120-bed nursing home and the 30-bed Spinal Cord Injury Center.

Wilford Hall Medical Center

Wilford Hall Medical Center, the Air Force's largest medical facility, is a national resource, providing complete medical care to military health care beneficiaries in the south central United States as well as specialized care to patients referred from all over the world. Wilford Hall has four overall missions. The primary mission is military readiness—to train, plan for contingencies and prepare to deploy elements to forward areas around the world.

As a second mission, Wilford Hall provides a worldwide referral center and operates a comprehensive community health care system for active duty military personnel and other beneficiaries. Third, Wilford Hall is the Air Force's foremost provider of medical education, providing the Air Force with some 65 percent of its physician specialists, 85 percent of dental specialists and a full spectrum of other training. The medical center's fourth mission is clinical investigations.

Wilford Hall's patient care mission includes more than 27,000 inpatient admissions per year and more than one million clinic visits. The medical center provides the entire range of care from sick call to surgery, and serves as the national center of excellence for a number of programs. The medical center operates the only programs in the Department of Defense for allogeneic bone marrow transplantation and the military's only eye bank. The organization operates the Air Force's treatment and evaluation center for HIV. Wilford Hall OB-GYN and neonatology programs are recognized around the world.

The medical center's support of San Antonio's emergency medicine structure is unique in the nation. Wilford Hall and Brooke Army Medical Centers participate fully in the trauma and emergency medicine care of the San Antonio and south Texas civilian communities, with each military medical center receiving approximately one-fourth of the city's emergency ambulance missions. Since the two military centers receive almost 60 percent of the city's penetrating trauma, typically gunshot and knife wounds, the system provides excellent training for wartime situations.

Although formal training programs at what is now Wilford Hall date to the early days of World War II, postgraduate medical education as we now know it began with establishment of the nurse anesthetist training program in 1952. Programs have been added steadily over the years until the medical center today provides training to residents and fellows in 45 specialties. In addition, Wilford Hall conducts a variety of programs, including the practical phase of training for enlisted medical specialists (after having received didactic training at another base) and an active nurse internship program.

Military readiness is Wilford Hall's prime mission. From the time of the organization's founding in 1942, the medical center has put the defense of the nation first. During World War II, the organization provided medical care to aviation cadets and other military personnel and military training to newly-joined nurses and other professionals. During the Korean War, the medical center expanded to meet the geometrical increase in trainees and became a treatment point for war casualties flown to San Antonio. By the end of that conflict in 1953, the hospital had seen more than 30,000 air evacuees.
